Excellent news Jon! Journey begins soon! I will be launching a separate chat on Substack early January for all of us to talk before and during the read a long!
What a great year! I am so honored to be a part of the team and to see what is in store for 2025 - lots of Dante! Of your recommendations this year, I really enjoyed the Umberto Eco film, John Cassian's How to Focus, and Seneca's Letters. I think the highlight though was being introduced to Pierre Hadot, I am enjoying his brilliant books on philosophy.
I'm so happy to see that you enjoyed Florian Illies' Magic of Silence, about Caspar David Friedrich. It's not only a fascinating series of vignettes about his life, but also about the fate of so many of his paintings. I recommended it in my birthday essay on Friedrich for 3 Quarks Daily back in September: https://3quarksdaily.com/3quarksdaily/2024/09/natures-emissary-the-art-of-caspar-david-friedrich.html. Illies' other books similarly highlight the history of a year (1913) or a decade (Love in the time of hate), both collections of unexpected anecdotes about luminaries of those periods. Oh, and thanks for the Helgoland recommend. I've been looking for an accessible explanation.
The Everyman copy just arrived. Let it begin!
