ooooh, love this take. saving for a rainy day to reread and take notes!! I love a good villain- the best is when they're just as sympathetic as hero, or just as intelligent, or equally captivating.

have you read the Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett, by any chance?

“Don’t be productive for the sake of being productive.”

In a past life I worked with government agencies here in the US on their performance measurement systems. There are 3 simple rules to make it work:

- The greater the effort to measure everything, the greater the resistance to measure anything.

- At some point the collection of data will outweigh the benefits derived from it.

- It is better to have an imprecise measure of the right concept than a precise measure of the wrong one.

I still live with those rules in mind. 😊
