"If a man knows not to which port he sails, no wind is favourable." I love that Seneca quotation. Wonderful to discover authors talking to each other across time.
"I guess this is what happens when you donβt have YouTube Premium for your entertainment 700 years ago." Thank you for my biggest laugh of the day! π
"All sinners that Dante encounters, one way or another, want their name to be preserved and be remembered in the world of living. None of them, as none of us, want to vanish." -> I was reading The Letters of St Margaret Mary Alacoque in which her expressed preference to be forgotten reminded me of this (perhaps she would have liked St. Bernadette Soubirous's quote on a broom being put away after its work is done - in St Margaret Mary's case, however, the broom's work was not done yet and this was a trial to her). If we had no self-love we would either be indifferent to fame (neither desiring fame nor desiring anonymity), or else (if there were no sin in it on anyone's part) we would lean slightly towards being looked down on (because Christ was).
This substack is such a deep and precious gift. Thank you.
Agree wholeheartedly.
I think all the people here reading were meant to find it at precisely the right time in our lives.
I so greatly appreciate Vashikβs learned and humane commentary. Thank you!!
